2024 Student Recycling Ambassador Projects

Putting the A(rt) in STEAM

The 2024 SRA Cohort, saw 13 Detroit high school students representing Cass Tech, Renaissance, Western, Detroit International Academy for Young Women, MLK, and Lincoln-King. The program empowered these specially selected and highly interested Detroit high school students who are deeply passionate about their community and the environment to showcase their commitment through working within the realms of STEAM, equity, future-mindedness, and supporting fellow residents. The completion of this cohort means they will have excelled on their journey to become stronger advocates for their community and planet as well as prepare them for an even brighter future based on their passions.

The SRA Class of 2024: Jessica Rivera, Leighton Kelly, Sydney Clements, Kamryn Washington, Samiya Simmons, Zoe Pitt, Emani Williams, Ahlierah Howell, Aliryca Harris, Nia Phillips, Riya Vyas, Tae’Iona Hill, Marissa Brooks

They chose their path for this program and it included sustainability, justice, careers, and creativity - giving Green Living Science the ability to provide comprehensive education and hands-on activities that engaged students in meaningful environmental action. One of the biggest hands-on activities, aside from signing up over 30 residents in the Blackstone Park neighborhood of Detroit for free recycling carts, was their ART Gallery (Accountable for Recycling Together) project. This week-long project was designed to inspire others to recycle/upcycle through narrative art using only items they found at Detroit’s residential recycling dropoff center, Recycle Here!

Fast forward to her junior year, she went on a tour of the Marathon Oil Refinery in Southwest Detroit, where she learned about how the Refinery has been polluting the area and poisoning the community for decades. That same summer, Kennedy was accepted into the Student Recycling Ambassador program where she excelled and shined.
