Recycling Ambassadors
driving sustainability in Detroit
Curbside Recycling Ambassadors play a vital role in empowering neighborhoods and community members to become sustainability leaders.
About recycling ambassadors
Our mission is to educate Detroit residents about the city’s Curbside Recycling program. Curbside Recycling Ambassadors actively engage with Detroit residents throughout the city, assisting them with signing up for a free recycling cart by providing recycling education.
They inform the community about what materials can be recycled, how the program works, and why recycling is essential for a sustainable future.
Detroit’s pilot curbside recycling program began in 2009. In 2015, it went city-wide as an opt in program. Because of this, not everyone who lives in the city is aware that they can start recycling at home.
Detroit RECYCLING HISTORY
Detroit’s pilot curbside recycling program began in 2009 and expanded city-wide in 2015 as an opt-in service. However, we recognized that reaching every resident with this new initiative would be a challenge.
To address this, we launched the Curbside Recycling Ambassador program in 2015. This program identifies community leaders who connect with their neighbors to spread awareness about curbside recycling and encourage participation. These Ambassadors are vital to ensuring the success of recycling efforts city-wide, helping build a more sustainable Detroit for everyone.
