POSITION: Director of Community Engagement 




We are currently seeking an eager and self motivated individual to help us grow the organization. The Director of Community Engagement will oversee programming related to the curbside recycling education and outreach program for the city of Detroit and will manage the BEE Green Business program. This position will be working closely with city officials to promote recycling throughout the city of Detroit while also engaging with residents of Detroit and promoting access to the curbside recycling program in Detroit. The Director will oversee a grant with the City of Detroit Department of Public Works on a recycling expansion initiative to set up recycling in multi-family housing, municipal buildings, commercial facilities, and public spaces.


The Director of Community Engagement will manage the Curbside Recycling Ambassador program. An initiative to empower Detroit residents to be sustainability leaders in their community to promote the curbside recycling program. This role requires someone to ensure excellence in our day-to-day work while helping us achieve our sustainability goals in the city and as an organization.





Founded in 2011, Green Living Science(GLS) is a Detroit based non-profit organization focused on providing sustainability education to students, families and businesses throughout the community. The organization’s mission is to help Detroiters deepen their understanding of their impact and reliance on the natural environment. GLS has played an active role through local government participating in conversations around waste and recycling and working towards creating a sustainable and resilient Detroit. Our programming includes working with youth, businesses, and the community. 



  • Work with Department of Public Works to see through goals as they relate to the grant provided by the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy and the Sustainability Action Agenda.

  • Assist facilities with developing recycling infrastructure and education to ensure program sustainability.

  • Manage the Curbside Recycling Ambassador program & Bee Green Business program

  • Develop effective marketing strategy for promotion of business and community programs.

  • Collaborate with local community partner organizations and community groups to ensure families are informed about the City of Detroit curbside recycling program.

  • Evaluate, revise, and implement the program as needed.

  • Responsible for communication to diverse stakeholders – community, municipality, city council, business partners, and funders.

  • Maintain and build new collaborative relationships to ensure program success.

  • Stay current and provide updates on knowledge of recycling and waste reduction initiatives, locally, statewide, and nationally.

  • Support Executive Director and staff on grant reporting as it relates to the community and business programs.

  • Serve as primary contact for local media outlets and be knowledgeable source of information on programs and the organization.

  • Enhances organization reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests, and exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.



  • Candidates for the position must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field, a driver’s license and mode of transportation

  • 2-3 years of professional experience doing community engagement

  • Waste and recycling knowledge in Southeast Michigan region

  • Highly effective verbal and written communicator

  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills

  • Demonstrated expertise with building relationships

  • Highly motivated and flexible – Accustomed to changing processes

  • Proficiency and comfort using cloud based collaborative software, such as Google Docs, Google Sheets, DropBox, Trello, as well as Microsoft Office programs including Excel

  • Experience with design programs such as Adobe Suites, Canva, etc are preferred

  • Passion for spreading awareness of environmental issues through education

  • Applicants who live in the City of Detroit will be highly considered for the position



This is a full time position with a salary range of $43,000-$46,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include 401K, health care, dental and vision, mileage reimbursement, 19 days paid time off, after completing 60 days of employment, in addition to holidays.
