POSITION
Director of Education
DESCRIPTION
We are currently seeking an eager and enthusiastic individual who is responsible for managing all youth programs. This position will support educating youth in Detroit about the environment and how to recycle and practice the 3 Rs. The Director of Education will oversee and develop all programming for youth in schools and through youth partnerships. This position will work closely with the Detroit Public Schools Community District and will maintain relationships with teachers and other partner organizations. The Director will be responsible for executing programs as well as contribute to finding resources and funding to support new youth program initiatives.
This role requires someone who is passionate about the environment and understands the urgency of climate change. The goal of the youth programs is to inspire the next generation of environmental leaders in Detroit by educating about the issues and inspiring civic action. Youth programming consists of, but is not limited to, field trips, assemblies, in-class lessons, and summer camps.

ABOUT GREEN LIVING SCIENCE
Founded in 2011, Green Living Science(GLS) is a Detroit based non-profit organization focused on providing sustainability education to students, families and businesses throughout the community. The organization’s mission is to help Detroiters deepen their understanding of their impact and reliance on the natural environment. GLS has provided Detroit Public Schools environmental programming since 2012 with science based lessons and presentations that align with state standards. Our programming includes working in Schools, Businesses, and the Community.
ACTIVITIES + RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Fulfilling grant and city contracts to ensure PreK-8th grade students are educated about recycling and sustainability:

Managing contract staff to deliver high quality programming including: Recruitment, Onboarding, Training, Schedule Management and Coaching for contract employees

Personnel Management of non-traditional staff
-
Comfort with hands on teaching when Contract staff is unavailable
-
Grant funded programming management including budgets, staffing, scheduling, and executing activities
-
Refine, update, and implement GLS curriculum as needed.
+ Creating and Maintaining positive Partner and Stakeholder Relationships:
-
School and Teacher outreach for program marketing and activity scheduling
-
Build and maintain relationships with individual and school administration to positively represent Green Living Science as a trusted partner.

Establish a communication network to share upcoming events, and opportunities to youth program stakeholders
-
Maintain the established relational network with DPSCD including the Office of Science curriculum and the district office.
+ Implement Summer Programming and Special Projects:
-
Develop curriculum and program for new partners and/or grantors
-
Deliver existing curriculum and program to youth, as requested
-
Lead special programs and projects such as the Student Recycling Ambassador program, youth camps, partner requested programming such as Girl Scouts, and more.

Coordinate with the Community Engagement team to provide educational lessons at existing programming such as Our Backyard Detroit, Community Events, etc.

Comfortable with hands on teaching in non-traditional settings

Manage the BEE Green Plastic STEAM Machine mobile youth experience
+ Event Planning and Coordination:

Volunteer Coordination for logistical and day of support

Coordinate event logistics including vendor support, participants, budget, staffing, and participant experience

Collaborate with other departments and staff within Green Living Science

Coordinating with other local nonprofit organizations and community partners
+ Grant Management:

Track program outcomes and deliverables

Maintain program budget

Adhering to grant guidelines and expectations

Grant reporting
+ Direct work with children:

Create an engaging and fun environment conducive to learning for all students.

Exemplify the mission and values of GLS.
SKILLS + EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
+ Bachelor's degree, teaching certification preferred, or equivalent in a related field, a driver’s license and mode of transportation.
+ 2-3 years of professional experience working with youth.
+ 2-3 years of professional experience managing existing program and creating new programming to meet projected outcomes
+ At least 1 year management experience
+ Grant management experience, including:

Managing program aspects to ensure we continue to get grant awards

Collection and analysis of program data for reporting purposes
-
Providing content for grant applications
-
Aligning program to budget and grant stipulations
+ Strong public speaking and classroom management skills.
+ Proficiency and comfort using cloud based collaborative software, such as Google Calendar, Google Sheets, Google Docs, Canva, and Monday.
+ Honor and respect for the Detroit Community and Residents.
+ Demonstrated expertise with building relationships.
+ Passion for spreading awareness of environmental issues through education.
+ Applicants who live in the City of Detroit will be highly considered for the position.
+ Must pass a background check.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
+ Experience with design programs such as Adobe Suites, Canva
+ Some educator experience is preferred (formal or informal)
+ Comfortable and experienced in driving a trailer
COMPENSATION
This is a full time position with a salary range of $45,000-$50,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits include 401K, Health Insurance (including vision & dental), and 19 days paid time off after completing 90 days of employment, in addition to holidays. Other benefits include mileage reimbursement and professional development.
